BACKGROUND CHECK
POLICY
Background checks are mandatory for all Red
Cross workers. Please help us maintain the trust
of the American people by complying with this very
important national policy.
All
our local volunteers and employees need to complete
their background checks. You will be receiving
instructions on how to submit your own background
check on-line. We value your support in meeting this
requirement efficiently and in a timely manner.

BACKGROUND
CHECKS – FACT SHEET
The Red Cross believes that in order
to maintain the trust of the American people and
provide them with the best quality service, Red
Cross employees and volunteers must undergo
background checks. The following information
outlines key points of the background check
initiative.
-
All
Red Cross employees and volunteers must have a
successful background check prior to beginning
employment or registered volunteer service with
Red Cross.
-
The basic minimum Background Check
Standard includes the following:
All states now report sex offenders
to the National Criminal File. Presence on a sex
offender registry, no matter how long ago the
offense took place, represents failure to meet the
Red Cross minimum standard.
-
Volunteer background checks:
All volunteers must undergo a
background check prior to registered volunteer
service. In times of disaster, volunteers may work
for no more than 7 days before they must register
and undergo a background check. Certain volunteers
in exceptional circumstances may not be required
to register and undergo background checks.
-
Reducing workplace risk:
In addition to performing
background checks, Red Cross units will also
reduce their exposure by adopting and consistently
adhering to sound management practices for both
employees and volunteers. These practices include:
effective screening of applicants, including
comprehensive interviews and thorough reference
checks, placement in appropriate work settings,
feedback and evaluation of performance, and proper
supervision of staff.
