Why do you need to take CPR or First Aid?
I've been CPR Certified in the past, should I take a Review or Challenge
Class?
I took my last CPR Class with the American Heart Association (AHA), which
American Red Cross (ARC) class do I need to take?
I think I would make a good American Red Cross Instructor...
I am a Day Care Provider

-
12
years or older you need Community CPR (Adult/Child/Infant CPR),

I am a Student studying to become a Registered Nurse

-
If NO, how old is your youngest patient?
My job requires me to have CPR or First Aid training
If CPR training is a requirement of your job, your supervisor should be
able to assist you in choosing the course that is right for you. If not,
here are some guidelines (Please check with state regulations if you have
any question as to which course you are required to take)
If your job puts you in direct contact with mostly:
-
Adults
(anyone 12 years old or older), you need Adult CPR or CPR Plus
-
Children
(anyone 11 years old or younger), you need Infant & Child CPR or Infant
& Child CPR with First Aid

All age groups, you need Community CPR (Adult/Child/Infant CPR),
Adult/Child and Infant CPR & First Aid or Adult and Child CPR & First
Aid (if you don't have any children under 1 year old).
I want to know how to care for family or friends in case of an emergency
You have several options, depending on the ages of your family and
friends. Which is you?
"Most of my family and friends are 12 years old or older."
-
Adult CPR or CPR Plus should meet your needs well. In this class, you
will learn how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies for
anyone who is 9 or older. If you wish to have first aid training as
well, sign up for CPR Plus
"My family and friends are all ages."
I have a child or infant with special medical needs
How old is your child?
-
11
years or under, you need Infant & Child CPR or Infant & Child CPR
with First Aid
-
12
years or older, you need Adult CPR or CPR plus

You may also want to take Community CPR (Adult/Child/Infant CPR),

Aid (if you don't have any children under 1 year old). which include
care for all ages.
I've been CPR Certified in the past, should I take a Review or challenge
Class?
Challenges:
-
Challenges are designed for individuals who are certain they can
complete the written test and perform the skills with no instruction.
All the instructor will do is check your skills and administer the
written test. If you are currently certified, please bring proof of
your certification.
-
Anyone may take a challenge course.
-
If you are currently certified, you may challenge as many times as you
wish before your certification expires.
-
Please keep in mind that we will not refund for courses that you fail.

Can I still take an ARC challenge or review course?
-
Because our certifications are for different lengths of time, the ARC
will only recognize an AHA certificate for the first year for review
and challenge classes.
-
If your certification is older then 1 year, you will need to take a
full class or a challenge.
I think I would make a good American Red Cross Instructor...
Do I need to be currently certified in my basic level skills to become an
instructor?
-
You do not need to be currently certified in your basic level skills
to become an instructor, however the first day of your instructor
class, you will take a pre-course test on all skills required for your
specialty as well as the written test. Basic Level skills are not
taught during an Instructor Course.
-
You must pass this without instruction. If you do not pass the
pre-course the first time, you may not proceed with the instructor
course. Refunds will not be issued if you fail the pre course
exams!
-
IT IS ASSUMED THAT BECAUSE YOU ARE TAKING AN INSTRUCTOR LEVEL COURSE,
YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO DO THE SKILLS REQUIRED FOR YOUR
SPECIALTY.
Are there any
prerequisites for becoming and instructor with the American Red Cross?
-
Along with the pre-course exam, other
pre-requisites for Instructor Level Courses include:
-
You must be at least 17 years old for most
courses
-
You must take Fundamentals of Instructor
Training
-
FIT is required for all ARC instructors.
Professional educators may be eligible to take this course as a
self-study.
-
You have 1 year from the date of your FIT
course to take your instructor specialty course. If you do not take the
instructor specialty course within that year, you must take FIT again.
