DISASTER TRAINING
The American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula provides emergency
shelter, food, clothing and first aid to meet basic human needs in
response to disasters large and small. In addition, we train
volunteers and the general public in disaster preparedness.
Please check carefully for prerequisites when registering. All

Fulfilling Our Mission, Mass Care Shelter Operations (COMBINED COURSES)
The purpose of this course is to enable participants to translate their
care and compassion into community action, through a uniform message. The
participants will be able to assess how to use their skills and abilities
to strengthen the capacity of both the community and the Red Cross to
better serve people affected by disaster. They will understand the mission
of the Red Cross, the principles and values that support the mission and
the expected behaviors of Red Cross volunteers and employees in the
conduct of that mission and then will be given the next steps. (Prerequisite:
None)
Mass Care: An Overview
This course provides basic information about the activities of the Mass
Care function. Participants learn the various roles and responsibilities
of Service Associates and the services provided by this function. (Prerequisite:
Introduction to Disaster Services, Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating
Your Compassion into Community Action)
Collaborating to Ensure Effective
Service Delivery
The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross employees and
volunteers to establish collaborative relationships that contribute to
coordinated disaster response and help to ensure effective service
delivery. This course will also prepare participants to begin conducting
liaison activities in a chapter and establish a foundation upon which they
build toward a career as a liaison in the DSHR System. (Prerequisite:

Mass Care: An

Damage Assessment Workshop -
ARC

Provides basic information on how
Disaster Services implements assessment techniques to fulfill the needs of
the organization during a local Disaster Action Team (DAT) response. This
PowerPoint based course provides hands on assessment of damage.

Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance - ARC 3072-1 (To

Introduces the Client Casework activity. Describes assignments
settings and provides knowledge, skills and tools needed to conduct a
quality interview and provide effective client service, including direct
assistance and referrals. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster

Community Action, Mass Care, and Shelter Operations)
Shelter Operations - ARC

Prepares Red Cross and other agency

to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of disaster. (Prerequisite:

Shelter Simulation

Provides hands on implementation of
the opening and closing of a Red Cross shelter. Discusses needs for
assessment and provides a document for further use by the participant. (Prerequisite:
Intro to Disaster Services, Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your
Compassion into Community Action, Mass Care and Shelter Operations.

Shelter Managers Workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to
prepare Red Cross and other support agencies staff to effectively and
sensitively manage shelter operations as a team, to meet the needs of
people displaced by disaster. This interactive presentation will utilize
lessons learned from past sheltering experiences to improve everyone's
performance. (Prerequisite: Intro to Disaster Services, Fulfilling
Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action, Mass Care,
Shelter Operations, Shelter Simulation, shift experience in at least
one working shelter, demonstrate leadership qualities, and
recommendation from Emergencies Services staff)
Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) Training: Ready,
Set, Roll (To view the schedule and register, click here) Prepares ARC
staff to safely and effectively drive an ERV and utilize its equipment to
meet mass feeding and other service needs of the people affected by
disasters. Participants will learn to identify and use all ERV equipment,
define integrated service delivery, describe safe food handling
procedures, how the dissemination and collection of information, provide
quality service to clients, and the proper maintenance requirements and
procedures. This is classroom part of the training, the actual driving
test may take place at later date depending upon the availability of the

First Aid/CPR certification, valid driver's license, satisfactory DMV
record, and successful completion of a defensive driving course) Please

Logistics: An Overview, ARC 3071-1
The purpose of this course is to provide basic information about the
processes of Material Support Services activities in support of an American
Red Cross disaster relief operation. Participants will learn about the
skills, abilities and knowledge needed by Material Support Services workers
and how they can become involved in their local chapter. (Prerequisite:

Response Center Enterprise Training and Simulation
Prepares Red Cross volunteers to assist the National
organization fielding phone calls from disaster
affected communities during large scale disasters.
Describes how to assist callers in locating
shelters, feeding sites, and recovery sites in the
disaster affected area, as well as assisting callers
in connecting with loved ones following a disaster.
(Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster,
working knowledge of Internet Explorer, ability to
enter information into national web-based database
while speaking with clients, and ability to handle
emotional callers with empathy while providing
services in compliance with American Red Cross
standards)
Disaster Frontline Supervision/ SimulationCourse
The purpose of this course is to prepare supervisors
to lead a team of disaster workers to deliver high
quality client service and to create a climate that
promotes worker satisfaction. As a result of this
course, participants will be able to—Identify the
factors that make supervising in a disaster
environment unique. Identify the roles and
responsibilities of a supervisor on a disaster
relief operation. Describe the supervisor’s role in
building a team and creating worker satisfaction.
Identify what it takes to organize and lead a work
unit. Recognize situations and behaviors that
require feedback, coaching or corrective measures.
Describe the process for providing an effective
