DISASTER TRAINING
The American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula provides emergency
shelter, food, clothing and first aid to meet basic human needs in
response to disasters large and small. In addition, we train
volunteers and the general public in disaster preparedness.
Please check carefully for prerequisites when registering. All
classes require
Introduction To Disaster Services.
All Disaster Training is FREE.
Disaster Services: An Overview
This is a basic level course that provides an
introduction to the American Red Cross Disaster
Services. The course engages participants through
integrated video and activities.

Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery
The
purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross
employees and volunteers to establish collaborative
relationships that contribute to coordinated
disaster response and help to ensure effective
service delivery. This course will also prepare
participants to begin conducting liaison activities
in a chapter and establish a foundation upon which
they build toward a career as a liaison in the DSHR

This course encompasses the tasks and
responsibilities of the Damage Assessment activity
both on a local Fire or on a Disaster Relief
Operation. (Prerequisite

Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance -
ARC 3072-1

Introduces the Client Casework activity.
Describes assignments settings and provides
knowledge, skills and tools needed to conduct a
quality interview and provide effective client
service, including direct assistance and referrals.

Shelter Operations - ARC 3068-11

Prepares Red Cross and other agency staff
to effectively and sensitively manage shelter
operations as a team to meet the needs of people
displaced as a result of disaster. (Prerequisite
Disaster Services: An Overview)
Shelter Simulation
(To view the schedule and register,

Provides hands on implementation of the
opening and closing of a Red Cross shelter.
Discusses needs for assessment and provides a
document for further use by the participant. (Prerequisite:
Disaster Services: An Overview and Shelter
Operations. Please bring
your Shelter Operations Participants manual with you
to class)
Shelter Managers Workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to
prepare Red Cross and other support agencies staff
to effectively and sensitively manage shelter
operations as a team, to meet the needs of people
displaced by disaster. This interactive presentation
will utilize lessons learned from past sheltering
experiences to improve everyone's performance. (Prerequisite:
Disaster Services: An Overview, Shelter Operations,
Shelter Simulation, shift experience in at least
one working shelter, demonstrate leadership
qualities, and recommendation from Emergencies
Services staff)
Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) Training: Ready,
Set, Roll
(To view the schedule and register, click here) Prepares ARC staff to
safely and effectively drive an ERV and utilize its
equipment to meet mass feeding and other service
needs of the people affected by disasters.
Participants will learn to identify and use all ERV
equipment, define integrated service delivery,
describe safe food handling procedures, how the
dissemination and collection of information, provide
quality service to clients, and the proper
maintenance requirements and procedures. This is
classroom part of the training, the actual driving
test may take place at later date depending upon the
availability of the ERV. (Prerequisite:
Disaster Services: An Overview, First Aid/CPR
certification, valid driver's license, satisfactory
DMV record, and successful completion of a defensive
driving course) Please provide copies of completion
all these prerequisites to your administrator before
the start day of the class)

Logistics: An Overview, ARC 3071-1
The
purpose of this course is to provide basic
information about the processes of Material Support
Services activities in support of an American Red
Cross disaster relief operation. Participants will
learn about the skills, abilities and knowledge
needed by Material Support Services workers and how
they can become involved in their local chapter. (Prerequisite:

Disaster Frontline Supervision/ Simulation Course
The purpose of this course is to prepare supervisors
to lead a team of disaster workers to deliver high
quality client service and to create a climate that
promotes worker satisfaction. As a result of this
course, participants will be able to—Identify the
factors that make supervising in a disaster
environment unique. Identify the roles and
responsibilities of a supervisor on a disaster
relief operation. Describe the supervisor’s role in
building a team and creating worker satisfaction.
Identify what it takes to organize and lead a work
unit. Recognize situations and behaviors that
require feedback, coaching or corrective measures.
Describe the process for providing an effective
performance evaluation. (Prerequisite:

have the training and experience in an activity
in which she or he expects to become a supervisor)
