Red
Cross assists multiple families after fires in
Seaford, Elkton, Newport and Ellendale Trained corps
of local disaster volunteers handle simultaneous
response
WILMINGTON, DE – April 5, 2006 – Unseasonable
weather was the backdrop for another 24 hours of
fires, with eight families being assisted by the
American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula in a
multi-pronged disaster response covering three
counties. This was just one day after families in
Seaford and Chesapeake City relied on Red Cross for
disaster assistance, and a Pots Net family also
called on Red Cross after a lightning strike on
Monday night.
Seaford couple in overnight fire An overnight
house fire a N. Bradford Street resulted in one
adult being taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
The man’s fiancée was helped by Red Cross
volunteers, who took care of the couple’s immediate
needs, including accommodation..
Elkton family in house fire A fire that occurred
this morning on Dashwood Road, destroyed the home
occupied by an adult and a 17 year old teenager. The
American Red Cross assisted the family with lodging,
clothing, and groceries, and comfort kits.
Newport apartment fire displaces five families
Five families were helped by the American Red Cross
after a fire on W. Market Street in Newport this
morning. All five families were provided overnight
accommodation after they were able to salvage
clothing and food from their homes.
Ellendale family of three in mobile home fire Red
Cross Disaster Action members assisted a family of 3
adults after a mobile home fire in Ellendale, DE, on
Sharons Road.
In all cases, Red Cross assisted with immediate
disaster-caused needs – primarily temporary shelter,
food and clothing – and provided information on the
steps the families should take to cope with the
disaster and plan their recovery.
