More than 50 helped by Red Cross after early morning apartment fire in Newark

Wilmington, DE – April 23, 2006 – Nine Red Cross volunteers were on the scene of a major apartment fire which swept through the Chelsea on the Square apartments, off Rte 896 and across from Glasgow High School, earlier this morning. At this time, 51 people have been left homeless after fire destroyed the two buildings, comprising 26 units. The nine members of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team are providing canteening services on site for the affected residents from their Emergency Response Vehicle. Apartment management has provided accommodation for 19 families, for whom Red Cross is supplying air mattresses, bedding and linens. The other families will be temporarily housed in a local hotel. Red Cross will take care of the immediate needs of those affected, including food, clothing, medication, mental health counseling and other basic necessities, and is working with the apartment management and other community partners to help with their longer-term recovery needs.
