Red Cross disaster relief for Glasgow apartment fire
estimated to run to more than $20,000
Wilmington, DE – April 26, 2006 – It is
estimated that more than $20,000 could be spent by
the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula to
take care of the immediate emergency needs of the 58
people displaced by last Sundays’ apartment fire at
Chelsea on the Square apartments in Glasgow, New
Castle County.
This was confirmed by Mark Tinsman, Emergency
Services Director for the American Red Cross of the
Delmarva Peninsula, who said that to date $13,671
has been spent on this disaster. He explained that
the expenditure resulted from providing those
affected with vouchers for temporary accommodation
at area hotels, clothing, food, air mattresses,
linens and bedding. In addition, Red Cross
volunteers were on the scene from early morning with
the organization’s Emergency Response Vehicle,
providing affected residents and responders with
breakfast, snacks and lunch. Other services that Red
Cross provided included replacement of lost
medications. Trained volunteers were on hand to take
care of the immediate basic needs of those left
homeless by the fire and the steps they should take
towards recovery. Red Cross also provided mental
health counseling for the affected residents and
continues to work with the apartment management and
other community partners to help with their
longer-term recovery needs. |
