14 People Assisted By Red Cross After Early Morning Newark Apartment Fire

Wilmington, DE – December 30, 2006 – 14 people, including 9 children, were assisted by Red Cross volunteers after a fire at their homes in Kayak Court Apartments, Newark (in the Glasgow area, near Four Seasons shopping plaza). The three families were provided with temporary accommodation through the holiday weekend, food and clothing, by trained volunteers from the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula, who were on the scene shortly after the 2:30am fire, earlier this morning. The fire, which completely destroyed one unit and caused major damage to the other two units, was brought under control by several local fire companies.

The American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula is seeking volunteers and provides free training for those wishing to become disaster volunteers, who assist families devastated by fires, floods and other disasters. A volunteer orientation will be at the Red Cross offices in Wilmington, in the Community Services Building on 100 W 10th Street, on Tuesday January 9th, from 5:00-6:00pm. Register by leaving a message at (302) 472-6240 or info@redcrossdelmarva.org.
